Why Pursue Living History?

| Jousting during the medical school years |

In 1988, after consulting numerous original sources and historical commentaries, I began teaching myself and a few close friends the all-but-lost art of jousting. One day, as I was wheeling my horse to charge, I realized that I had gained more insight in a single day of actual jousting than in over a decade of reading about it. Since that moment, I have remained convinced that many valuable insights into history are best gained through combining traditional research with serious re-enactment using historically accurate replica tools, weapons, armor, food, clothing, etc.

During the last 23 years, I've had the pleasure of working with a number of history oriented organizations. My most recent efforts have been as a founding member of "Bartholomew Bramble's Schoole of Defence and the Arts Mylitarie", an Elizabethan era living history fight school with a strong educational mission.
The Bramble Schoole (based in Springfield Missouri) is a team of amateur historians, historical fencers, and living history practitioners who study and demonstrate the martial aspects of life during the Renaissance. The Bramble Schoole pursues serious academic inquiry into the techniques and practice of Elizabethan era swordplay and other military disciplines. Members of The Bramble Schoole have lectured and provided various formal and informal educational presentations to the general public, public and private schools, and universities.
